Jon Snow is Eddard (Ned) Starks son, but his not from his wife. So he is known as the bastard child. And no one ever lets him forget it. Before Jon was born his father Ned married his wife Catelyn, but when Ned was at war he slept with Jon's mother then Jon was born. Yes, most husband's have bastard children but they never see them. Not in Jon and Ned's case, Ned came home from war not only with the pride of winning the war but always with the baby he had with the lady he slept with while he was away at war.
What Jon Snow brings to this book is something adversity. He is the only one of Ned's son that look like him. Which kills Catelyn, she hates him with every bone in her body. Jon doesn't fit in, in the North with his family because everyone knows he is that bastard child. But even though he doesn't have any full blooded siblings, he loves them all. When Bran fell and broke his back Jon went to see him even though Catelyn told him he did not belong there with his brother. He stayed because he loved him and didn't want to leave the North without telling him good bye and that he loved him.
