Lord Snow

This week I'm focusing on Jon's chapter in the assigned reading. At this point in the book, Jon has arrived at the Wall to take the black and join the Night's Watch. After speaking with Tyrion Lannister on the way there, he starts to realize that the Night's Watch may not be all the things he dreamed it was. When he gets there, he finds a run down group of bastards, thieves, and rapers, ignorant of how to properly wield a sword. Jon seems to make enemies with his brothers in the Night's Watch very quickly. The one-armed metal smith told Jon this is because he acts like he's better than everyone, and quickly puts him in his place, reminding him that he isn't actually royalty. "Lord Snow" seems to have a problem with his authority figures, and they seem to have a problem with him too. To add to all of Jon's struggles, his relationship with his uncle Benjen Stark becomes tense shortly before he disappears. Jon feels more and more guilt for the things he thought about his uncle with each day Benjen doesn't return to the Wall.
I very much enjoy the development of Jon Snow's character in the last 100 or so pages we've read as a class, and look forward to reading the rest of the book.

P.S. There's a sick female-fronted screamo band from Chicago called Lord Snow. I didn't realize their band name is a Game of Thrones reference until now. (lordsnow.bandcamp.com)

  1. Remember to not just summarize but also to analyze the chapter. Interesting about the band though, I will have to check them out.
