Jon pg 49

The setting of this chapter is in the the great hall of winterfell. they are here for a feast held in the kings honor. Jon sadly though has to be seated away from the rest of his family because his step mother thinks "it might give insult to the royal family" being Jon is the bastard son. But Jon considers himself Lucky at this time because he is free of all the rules that his siblings have to follow. Jon also sparks up a conversation with his uncle on how he wants to be a part of the night watch but before to long his uncle shuts him down saying that he is too young to take on this task. After this wake up call that Jon receives he stumbles outside and sparks up another conversation with the "dwarf" of the royal family, who reassures Jon that being a bastard isn't all that bad and if you accept the fact that you are a bastard then it wont be able to hurt you anymore.

This chapter is important because it shows part of the day to day struggles that Jon  faces as the bastard child, how he can be singled out at points. But this chapter also reveals that Jon can enjoy these things sometimes because it gives him some sort of freedom. This chapter is also important because it reveals more about the characters, whether its members of the royal family being described by Jon as they walk in or the personality of Jon's stepmother and how she truly sees Jon. What I particularly like about this chapter and my reasoning for choosing it is the positive message behind it. Just as Jon said its not always bad being the odd one out, also I like the statement made by Lannister, "Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it and it will never be used to hurt you." I find this statement to be very powerful and inspiring. This chapter showcases the underdog who needs to learn to accept himself for what he is in order to move past it and shows the judgment of people. How Jon's step mother bans him from sitting with the rest of the family because he is not as good as them, when in reality he could be just as good if not better than them in many areas. And even though Jon falls victim to many judgments and criticism he is not a saint either. For example when he judges the royal family when the are walking in, one being ugly and judging another based on the things his dad has told him, without Jon even giving him a chance and to form his own opinions.
