Summary
In this chapter, which is the second time that Daenerys is presented in the book, she weds Khal Drogo, Deanerys throughout the majority of the chapter is scared, unsure and frighten to her core about being married to a man she does not know. Not only that but the physical aspect of the marriage is what she is so scared of. She could not enjoy the celebration because she kept thinking that at the end of the party she will have to have sex with her husband and she described more than once how big he is and how fragile she felt next to him. Daenerys let go of her nerves a little bit when she was receiving the brides gifts. She was very trilled and amazed with all the beautiful gifts that were giving to her. In particular, the one her husband gave to her which was a horse. At the end of the party, Deanerys and her husband rode their horses till they came to a stop, they got off their horses and Khal began trying to have sex with Deanerys but Deanerys cried instead. Khal tried to make her comfortable and be gently with her.
Importance of Chapter
I believe that this chapter is important within the context of the larger story because it leaves you in great wonder. Viserys tells great tales of what used to be and how they were once loyalty but you begin to wonder how much of it it's true. By having his sister married off with Khal Drogo you understand his motives of power but you also wonder what is to come from this wedding. People will begin to find out of the marriage and their reaction to it, I think is what's important in the context of the lager story. In later chapters, Robert tell Neds about the wedding, " Daenerys Targaryen has wed some Dothraki hoserlord..."
and he is one person who is not happy about it and wants to kill Deanerys, "I will kill every Targaryen i can get my hands on, until they are dead as their dragons, and then I will piss on their graves." It leaves you to wonder if a war will begin to assure that Viserys or anyone else from the Targaryen family will not take to be royalty.
Class
The topics that this specific chapter introduces to class is a couple of things; violence and treatment of women. The way the Viserys treats his sister, Daenerys is violent. He has installed feared in her to listen and do what he wants, " Yet that night she dreamt of one. Viserys was hitting her, hurting her." Also, the way that the Dothraki were said to act " The Dothraki mate like animals in their herds . There is no privacy in a khalasar." And it was mentioned that there was to be at least three killing in order for the marriage to be blessed. Marrying Kahl Drogo showed Deanerys a sort of violence that she was not used to. Also, it showed the treatment of women of that time. Women were used to get what they wanted. whether it is children, pleasure or a throne. Men told women what to do and they are not to say much of the matter. For Example, Viserys simply sold Daenerys into marriage so he could one day hold throne. Another example is Ned took Roberts offered even after his wife insisted on it not being a good idea and also took some of their children with him, which was against his wife willed.
