Summary
The chapter begins with Ned having to go to his first council meeting and him being extremely tired and not really wanting to go but going because he HAS to. Once at the meeting, the others members begin to discuss the things on their to-do list and Ned finds out that the kingdom is in major debt and that it does not seem to worry King Robert. Also, a tourney is supposed to take place to honor the new King's Hand, which is Ned and he is not wanting this to happen because of the amount of debt the kingdom is under. Shortly after the meeting is over and Ned is heading to his room, Littlefinger tells him to follow him and unsure and not trusting, Ned does so. Littlefinger takes Ned to to a brothel and Ned is confused and angry on why they are there. Once inside the brothel, Ned is taken into a room where his wife, Catelyn and Ser Rodrik are waiting for him. Ned is very surprised by their presence. Catelyn told Ned about the attempt murder against Bran and the dagger that was used to try to kill Bran. Catelyn reveals that the dagger belongs to Tyrion Lannister. Ned begins to ponder if the attempted murder of Bran has anything to do with Jon Arry's murder and how much involvement the Lannister's have. Ned instructs Catelyn to keep Winterfell safe in case of an attack. Ned plans to dig deeper to find out what happened so he can tell the King.
Importance of Chapter
I believe that this particular chapter is important within the context of the large story because it brings about a lot of questions and the author is setting the reader up to a lot of new information. The fact that the kingdom is well in debt and owes a lot of different realms a large amount of money can mean trouble for the kingdom if war were to occur, it puts the kingdom in a vulnerable position. Also, by having littlefinger help Catelyn hide and tell Ned about her presence the author is building a sort of an alliance between these characters "Ned believed not a word of that, but he kept his voice polite as he said 'You have my thanks as well, Lord Baelish'". The information that Catelyn gives Ned makes Ned want to dig deeper and find out the truth behind what is happening. Which in future chapters can mean that Ned can be put in danger because there are a lot of "spiders" watching him. At the end of the chapter, with one of the last things being said about war "and pray that he is the man I think he is, he finished silently, and not the man I fear he has become" makes you wonder what things lye in future chapters.
In this chapter, you can also see Ned's perception of King Robert change. Ned believes that Robert is a great man and a great king but after finding out that the kingdom is inn debt it makes Ned question Robert's leading strategies. Also, by having the Lannisters so present and involved in the kingdom, it also changes and questions Ned's idea of what truly is going on within the kingdom and what are people's motives.
The topic this chapter introduces to the class is loyalty. Littlefinger shows his loyalty to Catelyn while Ned is questioning Littlefinger's loyalty in general. Also, Ned questions the loyalty he has for Robert and the loyalty that the Lannister have to Robert or where/whom does the Lannister loyalty stand.
